Freedom in Christ
The Gift of Light and Life
Recently, when I’ve been preaching, I’ve felt the weight of the privilege that comes with proclaiming God’s Word so openly and directly. Maybe it’s the books I’ve been reading about the persecuted church, or maybe it’s what I’ve seen online. Whatever the reason, I’m reminded that, for me personally, I don’t fear for my life when I step into the pulpit.
I don’t take that privilege for granted. It has motivated me in several ways. In my studying, it compels me to take the task seriously and give it my all. In my writing, it makes me strive for clarity. In my delivery, it encourages me to be bold.
I’m grateful for the freedoms God has given us, but I’m not so naïve as to think they will last forever—or that they are enjoyed by everyone around the world. Because of that, I’m even more grateful for the ultimate freedom we have in Jesus Christ: freedom from sin and death, and the gift of light and life.
