How to Preach Effectively to Children: 5 Lessons I Learned on Faithful Preaching in AWANA Children’s Ministry

As this season of AWANA comes to a close, I want to share a few lessons I’ve learned from giving messages to a group of children on Friday nights.
Through trial and error, I’ve discovered what tends to work best for me. Here are some of my biggest tips:
Keep it simple with no more than two main points. Children need clarity, repetition, and focus. Illustrations work exceptionally well on Friday nights.
Ten minutes of preaching is the sweet spot. Fifteen minutes should be the absolute maximum. A long sermon feels longer on Friday nights.
Applications must be intentional and relatable to the children. Speak to situations they actually experience—especially as it relates to parents and friends.
Remember that the counselors are listening too. Try to include applications and encouragements that speak to them as well.
You will probably be physically and mentally exhausted by the end of the week when it’s time to preach, so be prepared to make adjustments.
My children will be taking a break from AWANA next year, but I’ve let the leaders know that I would still be happy to help with messages whenever needed!
This season in children’s ministry, I’ve learned that faithful preaching is not about sounding impressive, but about communicating God’s truth clearly.
