My vote for the winner and award of distinction were reflected in the actual winners. Here are my submission notes, with links to my full reviews.

Winner: Rembrandt is In the Wind by Russ Ramsey

What does art reveal about the world? In Rembrandt is In the Wind, Russ Ramsey reveals how we can learn to love art through the eyes of faith. Ramsey took me on a behind-the-scenes tour of some of the world’s most championed artists and works. He guided me through their stories, showing me the gospel themes that echo in their lives and art – bringing biblical passages as proof. Ramsey’s skill at connecting story with spiritual reality was masterful and moving. Captivating and enchanting, this book made me wonder at the world. I saw more behind these famous works of art. I found depth in the lives of the artists. And I felt hope in a glorious God who has sculpted a story of goodness, truth, and beauty – for all of the world to see.

Award of Distinction: A Supreme Love by William Edgar

What does jazz have to do with Jesus? In A Supreme Love, William Edgar explains how the music of jazz connects with the hope of the Gospel. It is a fascinating read for lovers of jazz and music, that bettered my understanding of how faith and art intersects with the history of our nation. I was shown that jazz cannot be separated from the sin of slavery. The importance of heaven was stressed, and I was reminded that music – like our humanity – is spiritual. Academic and approachable, this book shows how music and movements are intertwined. The gospel is displayed in jazz music alongside the themes of sorrow and joy. They ring out in worship – if you have ears to hear.
