Three Questions for Preachers

Inspired by Mike Bullmore’s article The 5 Greatest Heart Challenges Preachers Face, here are three questions we can ask ourselves as we prepare to preach:

1. Did I work hard? Did I rely on grace? These are not mutually exclusive.

“By the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me” (1 Cor. 15:10).

2. Did I do my best? Did I handle God’s Word rightly — giving it my due dilligence?

“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Tim. 2:15)

3. Did I devote myself to my work in the Scripture — did I give it my all with the time I have been given? Did I neglect any gifts, abusing them or taking them for granted, using them without carefulness? Am I continually practicing, immersing myself, and I am making progress?

“Devote yourself to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation, to teaching. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress” (1 Tim. 4:13–15)
