A Little Theology of Exercise
In A Little Theology of Exercise, David Mathis teaches about enjoying Christ in both body and soul. This 100-page book is a motivating read that encourages moving your body for the glory of God.
Mathis begins by explaining that God made our bodies, our bodies belong to God, and our bodies are for God. I was most moved by the idea that God Himself took on a human body and dwelled in our physical form. The fact that Jesus came to tabernacle with us, and that our bodies are now a temple for God, amazed me.
Physical and Spiritual Gains
The book goes on to offer five reasons for exercise: (1) we exercise to reflect God’s glory, (2) to improve our learning, (3) for training and discipline, (4) to energize and give us joy, and (5) to be ready to do good. I was convicted by how my complaints of being tired could simply stem from not taking care of my body. I was challenged to love God with my body, heart, and mind.
As someone who can relate to Mathis’ description of having a full-time job with young kids, I resolve not to let that be an excuse for neglecting exercise. With increasingly sedentary lives and ubiquitous digital screens, this book beckons me toward both physical and spiritual gains.
