Daily Strength

As a man in the modern world, how can I find my strength in God? In Daily Strength, Crossway presents a devotional for men to be strengthened by grace.

Equip and Encourage

Edited by Sam Storms, this resource aims to equip and encourage men. The goal is heart transformation. As I was reading, I found my heart moved and drawn to want more of God. It was refreshing to have words written directly to me as a man. The themes of seeking God’s calling, leadership, and living a life of faith are not forced. Rather, they come from the natural flow and applications of the text. I learned that God has something to say directly to men, and it was a joy to hear Him speak to my heart every day.

More than fifty men are credited as contributors, including Christopher Ash, Alistair Begg, Jon Bloom, James M. Hamilton Jr., Julius J. Kim, Dane C. Ortlund, Stephen T. Um, and Jared C. Wilson. Because the contributors are pastors, professors, and Christian leaders, I am used to reading many of their words in books, articles, and academic journals. Reading their devotionals brought a sense of familiarity but also simple profundity to the truth of the Gospel and the beauty of the Bible.

Feed Your Mind, Direct Your Heart

What I enjoyed most about this devotional is how it takes you through the entire Bible from Genesis through Revelation. Reading this book will not only give you an extensive overview of Scripture, but a succinct history of salvation. I was most pleased to see so many devotions in the Old Testament. And with each devotion being 1-2 pages, there is always a simple takeaway to make it time well spent. So while the book is feeding my mind, it is directing my heart as well.

This book does not mean to make you what the world defines as masculine. Instead, it directs your gaze towards Jesus and challenges you to a life of joyful obedience, grounded in the Bible and rooted in the Gospel. Being a man of God means allowing God’s grace to permeate my life at work, at church, and at home. As we work for the kingdom, we are also called to rest and worship. By God’s grace, we can find strength and help in our times of need.
