Disentangled

In Disentangled, Jo Johnson teaches how to tame your thoughts and feelings so you can live freely for Jesus. In this positive and practical book, she brings not only her expertise as a clinical neuropsychologist but also her sharp understanding of Scripture and of the God who created us.

Thoughts and Feelings

Part 1 of the book is primarily theological. It begins by explaining how our thoughts and feelings need to be noticed, given attention, and managed. We were designed to look up to God and out to others.

Sin causes us to look only at ourselves. God’s grace in Christ frees us from that rat race and enables us to run without the weight of guilt and shame.

Johnson shows how to intentionally use God’s values to guide your life—thinking of your actions as moving either toward or away from those values.

The Mind of Christ

In Part 2, Johnson gets more practical as she shares ways to disentangle yourself from your emotions—to come back to your senses, disconnect from your inner distractions, and reconnect with reality so you can do what’s right.

I was most interested to read how we can “hack” our fear response. This, Johnson explains, is how we can prevent anger (or any other emotion) from turning into sin. For me, that might mean going outside to shoot hoops.

I was most challenged to stop entertaining dangerous, sinful thoughts and instead take them captive with the mind of Christ. God has also given us the church—made up of many different parts—so that we can run the race together as we wrap ourselves in Jesus.

Run to Christ

The book concludes by reminding us of our heavenly hope: when we cross the finish line and the race is won. In a world that sees mental health issues on the rise, this thoughtful, gospel-rich guide is a welcome read. Hopeful and encouraging, it will help you lay aside every weight and burden as you run to Christ.
