How can Christians speak truth in the transgender debate? In God and the Transgender Debate, Andrew. T. Walker shows us what the Bible actually says about gender identity.
Believe the Bible
After an introduction by Albert Mohler, Walker helps us define common terms that revolve around the transgender debate: sex, gender, gender identity, gender dysphoria, and transgender. This is an important first step, and Walker makes it clear that we must believe the Bible is true.
Ultimately, the debate boils down to your worldview. Walker helps us understand what a worldview is by asking how we see and understand authority, knowledge, and trustworthiness. Throughout the book, Walker is able to help us understand large, and what I find to be often difficult concepts.
The Image of God
Chapter 5 brings up the fact that we are all created in the image of God, and that God has a specific purpose in how he created us. Walker explains to us his “Genesis Blueprint,” and I found it to be helpful and concise: (1) God created humanity in his image, (2) God created humanity male and female, and (3) God created male and female for one another. These facts are fixed and unchangeable.
Chapter 6 and Chapter 7 deal with brokenness and give us hope in a better future. Starting with a change of heart, we can a (better) future for our bodies. Walker offer a voice of assurance, grounded in Biblical realities.
Compassion and Change
Chapter 8 is a call to compassion and to follow the command of loving our neighbor, and Chapter 9 is a challenge to churches to stay convictional and steadfast. These two chapters highlight the entire tone of the book, one that I found to be unwaveringly anchored in Scripture, yet gracious to the readers and to those who need to hear.
Speaking to children, tough questions, and challenging the transgender movement ends the book. We are to reach out with open hands and open hearts. The world is changing, and Christians must be ready. This book is a blessed help.
