In the Shadow of the Cross

In In the Shadow of the Cross, Glenn M. Penner presents a biblical theology of persecution and discipleship. Drawing not only from careful study of Scripture but also from his firsthand experience with missionaries through his work at Voice of the Martyrs, Penner writes a book that engages the mind and reaches the heart.

Penner defines biblical persecution and suffering as suffering endured for the sake of righteousness. In Western pulpits, however, we often classify suffering as any discomfort we experience in this life. Stretching the concept in this way, without placing it in the proper biblical context, ultimately weakens our interpretation of what it truly means to suffer for righteousness’ sake.

Strength in Suffering

I was humbled to read how, throughout the Bible, sharing the gospel typically leads to persecution. This reality has caused me to examine my preaching and teaching in a new light—a weight I want to carry with me.

Though academic in nature, this book on suffering and persecution is surprisingly encouraging. It concludes by pointing readers to the return of Christ, offering motivation for missions and strength for enduring suffering.
