In Making Sense of Creation and Fall, Vern S. Poythress shows how the opening chapters of Genesis illuminate the Bible, God, and ourselves.
God’s Plan for Us
This book provides an introduction to the biblical-theological themes in Genesis 1–3, but in my opinion, it also explores them in considerable depth. It enhances our understanding of God’s plan for us.
Poythress examines the historical events in Genesis 1–3, the theology of what God is doing, and the literary artistry of the text—how it engages and invites the reader in. Poythress shows how these aspects can all be understood together without canceling one another out. It is both a scholarly and a moving read.
This book considers John Frame’s triad of lordship—authority, control, and presence—something I have always wanted to explore and learn more about. Poythress dedicates an entire chapter to applying this lordship triad. This chapter alone is incredibly rich and rewarding.
Genesis Gems
I also appreciated how Poythress examines the Trinity as it relates to Genesis 1–3. Having just finished reading Matthew D. Kim’s Introduction to Homiletics and being convicted by his Trinitarian approach to preaching, I found this chapter timely and further affirming of my convictions.
Poythress also examines the Law of Christ (Lex Christi), showing how Christ has fulfilled all the commandments and how he gives eternal life through faith in him. After reading the introductory chapters in Genesis, I await the consummation, when God’s attributes will be displayed even more magnificently.
This book will take you deeper into Genesis to discover its many gems. The themes that link God’s various works—from creation to providence to salvation—are many, and I am left in awe and inspired. I am motivated to fight against philosophical materialism and secularism. This book will cause you to “wake up to the rich meanings of the world.”
