Memorizing Scripture

How can you get better at Bible memorization? In Memorizing Scripture, Glenna Marshall offers a guide on the basics, blessings, and benefits of meditating on God’s Word. She gives reasons and practical tips to help you hide God Word’s in your heart.

I was most interested to see that God designed our brains to store new information - and that he desires us to use them to memorize his words. Marshall offers several methods to memorize, including writing, looking, listening, and speaking. We must remember that God wants us to remember, and he has given us the means to do so.

Come Closer to Christ

Marshall gives several reasons for Scripture memorization, and there were two that stood out to me personally. First is that we memorize to remain steadfast in suffering. God’s promises are what will help us persevere. Next, we memorize to renew our minds. While we live in an increasingly secular world, we must remember that God calls us to stay awake by hearing his voice and words.

The book ends with the assurance that memorization leads to lasting hope. I found this to call to be convicting. When we hide God’s Word in our hearts, we open ourselves to hear his voice, and he gives us hope. Scripture memorization is for all believers - and will bring us closer to Christ.
