Paradox People
In Paradox People, Jonathan Landry Cruse explores what it means to live out the Beatitudes.
Cruse begins by noting that modern Christians have grown adept at critiquing culture—quick to point out what’s right and wrong with the world around them. Yet in doing so, he argues, we’ve overlooked a deeper issue: we ourselves are part of the problem. We have become too much like the world. Our souls are tainted by sin and in need of cleansing. Cruse turns our attention back to the words of Christ in the Beatitudes—but more importantly, to the person of Christ, who embodied them perfectly.
Maturity, Witness, and Joy
Cruse is a gifted writer, skillfully wrapping each Beatitude in modern context and practical application. He writes personally and pastorally, weaving in Scripture throughout. The book is an exposition, brisk in pace, yet rich in insight. What I found most satisfying, however, came at the end. (Spoiler alert!) Cruse reminds us that while the Beatitudes describe the kind of people God blesses, they also show how, in living this way, we become a blessing to others. We become salt and light. We become like Christ.
Paradox People is an inspiring exploration of the Christian life, calling readers toward spiritual maturity, faithful witness, and the joy of life in Christ.
