Curated by Gordon J Keddie, the thematically arranged articles showcase McLeod’s ministerial priority of preaching the gospel and the whole counsel of God. Part 1: Redemption, centers on on our need of salvation. Part 2: Reconciliation, focuses on the work of Christ in relation to the church. And Part 3: Reformation, draws our attention to national reform, particularly the abolitionism of the Reformed Presbyterian Church in America.
MceLeod’s writing ministry is a reflection of his times. The RP Church in America was finding a relationship with the political institutions of her land. They were wrestling with Christ and civil authority. In fact, Civil War frames much of the background. You find a good mix of historical biography with devotional theology in this book.
The Authority of God
A change in emphasis is noted in the last years of McLeod’s life from ministry for and from the denomination to the outside world, to ministry to the denomination from the inside. When writing on “The Gospel Ministry,” he says that “The sum of pastoral duty is the edification of the church.” You can see that this was the heart of this historical minister.
The central theme I found throughout the book was on the authority of God. By his Word, he has instructed us on how we are to live and the way our lives should be governed. And by his Word – in the person of Jesus Christ – he has shown us how we can be righteous and right with God.
