Romans Word and Spirit Commentary
The Word and Spirit Commentary on Romans by Sam Storms is an excellent and insightful contribution to the study of the book of Romans from a Pentecostal-Charismatic perspective.
What sets this commentary apart are the specific sections of Pentecostal interest. Storms covers the charismatic gifts, the spiritual forces in relation to our sin, seeing the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament, and more. As I am preaching through Romans, this commentary has helped me clearly see the depth of Paul’s Spirit-filled and Spirit-centered life and ministry.
Seeing the Spirit in Scripture
I was most helped while preaching from Romans 12:3–8, especially in understanding the view on the gift of prophecy. It is speaking forth, in human words, something that the Holy Spirit has spontaneously revealed or brought to mind. It is comprehensible, inspired (spontaneously and unexpectedly), specific (in the context of the congregation), revelatory (a sign of God’s presence), and corporately affirmed.
While I identify as a Reformed Baptist, Storms is persuasive. Storms’ commentary is well-written and encouraging. I’ve gained a greater appreciation for the work of the Holy Spirit in Paul’s theology and in the life of the church today. This book has given me a deeper hunger for the Spirit’s presence and gifts, and a renewed desire to see them operating biblically and powerfully in the local church.
