In Talk About What Matters Most, J. Alisdair Groves offers a Christian man’s guide to forging meaningful friendships.
Groves begins by painting a picture of the spiritual reality of the battle we face as Christians. Men need to be able to speak openly about these spiritual battles, and Groves highlights the power of words to shape our lives and relationships. The need for a band of brothers who will fight alongside us becomes increasingly apparent.
Questions and Attention
One practical tool he offers is asking three questions: What is going best? What is going hardest? Where do I need to grow? These questions help move conversations beyond the surface and toward what truly matters.
I was most moved by Groves’s discussion of how screens play a significant role in preventing men from talking meaningfully with one another. I am resolved not to let screens get in the way and instead refocus my attention on my friends.
Listening and Learning
I was most challenged to try listening to learn our friends’ life stories, as well as the importance of encouraging, lamenting, and confessing together. One practical application is continually seeking to go one step deeper in each friendship rather than settling for surface-level conversations.
In today’s increasingly lonely world, this book is a powerful tool for men seeking to forge meaningful Christian friendships and prepare one another for the spiritual battles ahead.
