In The Hodder Bible Commentary: Exodus, Simon Vibert gives an excellent exegesis of this epic biblical book.

The themes of oppression and persecution, migration and spiritual pilgrimage, rescue and God’s sovereign power all stand out throughout the work.

As I saw in other Hodder Commentaries, Vibert examines the original context and audience, and then makes thoughtful applications to contemporary Western culture. For instance, having a large family resonates differently today than it did in biblical times. We must see how it is viewed as a blessing, but also in a spiritual sense—of making spiritual children who bring glory to God.

Echoes of Christ

What I enjoyed most was reading Vibert’s insights on those outside of Moses. While many commentaries rightly focus on this hero of the faith—and Vibert does this exceptionally well, especially in comparing Moses to Jesus—he also draws our attention to people like Pharaoh and his strategies, and to the Hebrew midwives, who show courage in action. It all helped me better see how God works behind the scenes.

Vibert also weaves in lessons from Moses’ leadership along the way. The Ten Commandments are thoroughly examined, rewarding the reader with a deeper look at God’s heart through His laws. He takes us to the tabernacle, where we catch a glimpse of what it means to dwell with God. Through the golden calf narrative, we see the cost of atonement for sin.

This is an incredibly rich commentary that will cause you to wonder anew at the Exodus story. And it will cause you to worship the God of the Israelites as you see echoes of Christ in their rescue.
