The Lives of the Puritans

What can we learn from the personal lives of the Puritans? In The Lives of the Puritans, Reformation Heritage Books presents Benjamin Brook’s biographical sketches and bibliographies of many of the English Puritans.

This 3-volume set is housed in handsome hardcover, giving these saints a proper home in church history. This would make the perfect Christmas gift for your pastor or Puritan enthusiast in your life.

Zeal and Passion

With nearly 1600 pages of fascinating stories, this book is a wonderful view into church history. More than 450 Puritans are accounted for, with insight into their interesting lives. Reading this set will inspire you with Puritan zeal, and encourage you to pursue God with Puritan passion.

What I enjoyed most about this set is the way it helps you see that the Puritans were a movement. While we may be familiar with a few famous names, this book makes it clear that many were ministering during that time.

Perkins and Stock

I was pleased to read about William Perkins, who “had a surprising talent for reading books.” He was a fast reader, and a prolific writer. Incredibly, he wrote so many books yet he was “lame of his right-hand.”

I learned about Richard Stock, a pastor whose “life was one uniform practical comment upon his doctrine.” He practiced what he preached. He was also unafraid to speak “with considerable freedom against the iniquities of the city.” To have this type of integrity while also being a minister to the public is inspiring.

A Dinner Party with the Puritans

The challenges of ministry, the character of the pastor, and the work of the Word are echoed throughout this set. Reading these books will be an easy way to get into simple biographies, and fans of the genre will find each entry to be a treat.

Reading this collection is like being invited to a dinner party with the Puritans. You will hear their stories, and see their God. I look forward to the day when we can feast together at the banqueting table of the Lord.

I received a media copy of The Lives of the Puritans and this is my honest review.
