The Old and the New

Can we really find Christ all throughout the Bible? In The Old and the New, Laurent Clemenceau presents Christ as the center of both testaments.

Translated by Damon Di Mauro, this 2016 title was originally published in French. Clemenceau is pastor of Evangelical Protestant Church in Villefontaine, Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes, France -- and he writes with a clear passion to present a full portrait of Jesus.

Expectations and Fulfillments

Clemenceau looks at 15 themes that are echoed throughout the Old and the New Testaments. He explains the Old Testament expectations as well as New Testament fulfillments. The end results is a better grasp of the entire biblical narrative and a better understanding of who Jesus really is.

The book begins by examining the themes of creation and new creation. Clemenceau then develops the themes of Adam and New Adam. I was most moved in Chapter 3: A Family Story. Clemenceau shows how Old Testament geneologies and lineages point towards the New Testament where believers are adopted into the family of God. Clemenceau shows how this theme brings us all into the story, inviting us to come and call God our Father.

Beautiful to Behold

Clemenceau writes with a casual candor, and the translation is clear and easy to read. I was most impressed with Clemenceau’s ability to articulate the theme of wisdom, and how Jesus is the wise one. The parallels between the descriptions of wisdom in the Old Testament and Jesus’ life and teachings in the New Testament are outstanding. I was moved to worship and wanted to see more of Christ in his word.

This book is grounded in biblical theology, written in a way that both scholars, laymen, and pastors will appreciate. Clemenceau’s insights are delightful and enjoyable to experience. Jesus will become more beautiful to behold.
