Worthy

What is the right way to worship? In Worthy, Nathan Eshelman expounds on the worship of God.

A Weight to Worship

At just a little bit less than 150 pages, this book packs a punch. Eshelman begins by helping us understand the word “worship.” It includes mental devotion, heart-filled praise, soulful trust, and time-sacrificing service. There is a weight to the word, and it must be used rightly with God.

Eshelman explains why God is worthy of worship. Creation, covenants, claims from the cross, and our communion with God are examined. The book then turns to how we have mishandled the worship of God and why we need direction. We study Cain’s vegetables, Aaron and the golden calf, and more.

Explanations and Encouragement

The solution is found when our worship is regulated to God’s Word. I especially appreciated the distinction made between elements and circumstances regarding worship. It takes wisdom and discernment to determine which is which. Interestingly, when concerning the public gathering of the church, Eshelman argues for acappella Psalm-singing. While I don’t come to the same conclusions, I appreciate his defenses.

The book ends by looking towards the global worship of God. This book is an excellent guide to the reason and rationale behind Reformed worship, and a great source of encouragement to the church to continue his praises.
