God is Our Strength

Two Signs that God is Strong

Aaron Lee | Psalm 46:1 | AWANA | October 3, 2025

Introduction

God's character teaches us who He is and shows us who we are.

Who is the strongest person you know? Maybe it’s your dad. The Bible says that God is our strength:

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

Let’s look at two signs of God’s strength:

1. Protects

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

The first sign of God’s strength is that he protects us. Other places in the Bible God is said to be a shield or a fortress.

Sometimes it does not matter how physically strong someone else is. There are times of trouble like temptation to sin, to make the right choices, or when you feel sad and discouraged. God protects you from these.

2. Present

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)

The second sign of God’s strength is that he is present with us. Other places in the Bible say that God is near.

Sometimes it does not matter how physically strong someone else is. There are times of trouble when you are alone or out in the world by yourself. God is always present.

Application

Therefore we will not fear… (Psalm 46:2)

The next verse gives us an application. The application is that you do not need to fear. We do not panic. We trust and have confidence that God is our helper. Admit, pray, trust.

Gospel

Jesus will show God’s strength. The rest of the passage details a coming period of peace that is only possible with Jesus:

  • V9  He makes wars cease to the end of the earth

  • V10 I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!

  • V11 The Lord of hosts is with us

Big Idea

God is our strength. We can trust in Him to be our refuge and help in times of trouble.

Conclusion

We know that our amazing Heavenly Father, our Dad, protects us and is always with us. We can trust Him in every situation we face.

Discussion

What are you afraid of? Ask your counselor to pray with you.
