Obedient Believers
Two Ways to “Keep” God’s Commands
Aaron Lee | May 1, 2026 | FCBCW Awana | John 14:15
Introduction
Is God like a boss where we’re just supposed to do what he says?
If you love me, you will keep my commandments. (John 14:15)
1. Continual obedience
The first way to understand keeping God’s commands is to continuously obey God’s commands.
To keep means to maintain, preserve, and be consistent. You willingly obey, submitting to his rules. You regularly follow him. Throughout the Bible, God equates his commands with who he is. It shows his character.
God is not like a boss where we can clock in and clock out of our job. We are continuously under his care and we are always to obey him.
Application: Obey God quickly.
2. Joyful obedience
The second way to understand keeping God’s commands is to joyfully obey God’s commands.
To keep means to guard and protect, as if it is a treasure. You are eager to obey God. You feel free when you obey God.
God is not like a boss where we have no relationship. He is real, accessible, and precious to us.
Application: Obey God with a good attitude.
Gospel
Jesus obeyed God perfectly.
he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death—even to death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8)
Big Idea
Christians love God when they obey him quickly and with a good attitude.
Conclusion
God is not like a boss. God is a Heavenly Father.
