Small Group Sharing: More of My Personal Life
The following is an article version of the audio transcript:
Small Groups: Sharing More of My Personal Life
I used to have a problem sharing in small groups. My small group is a men's small group, so I meet with some other men from my church. What I would do is only share about work. And while that's really important to me, it's not the entire picture of my life. What I realized is that I need my own framework to help me focus and share more in my own small group. In my Substack, I wrote seven different questions that help guide me. I want to share three with you today.
1. My Relationship with My Wife
The first is that instead of only focusing on work, I also want to talk about my own personal life. For me, the closest person to me is my wife. And so, in my small group, I want to ask, how's my relationship with Jess? Are we doing okay in our marriage? Is there something that we need to work on? Are we going through something together?
2. My Relationship with My Kids
Next, I also want to talk about my kids. Talking about my kids can come in different forms. One way I talk about my kids is just sort of like what they're going through and what they're struggling with, maybe their school or interpersonal things with themselves as siblings or with friends. But what I wanted to focus on was my relationship with them. How can I be a better father? What can I do to encourage them in their faith?
3. My Church and Ministry Involvement
A third thing I want to share more about with my men's group is the ministries that I serve in at church. I'm a worship leader, a preacher, and a teacher. I also run the social media at a church. And so, there are a lot of areas where I can share about what's happening ministry-wise. I also do parachurch ministries with my friends at Solar Network, and I also do my own ministry here at Dive in Dig Deep. And so, there are a lot of areas where I can talk about the different things that I'm doing ministry-wise that sometimes I just don't share in my small group.
Sharing More Than Just Work
I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing about work, but what I want to do is share more of my personal life. And so, these questions help guide my conversation so I'm not just sharing the same thing over and over again. "Oh yeah, you can pray for work. You can pray that I'm doing a good job." I want to share a little bit more about me personally.
On my Substack, I detail seven different questions that help guide my sharing. These are just three of them. Follow and get a glimpse into my personal life. I also share the books that I'm reading, and I curate deals from Christian bookstores.
