In Young Womanhood, Amy DiMarcangelo writes about finding joy and purpose in the body God has given you. Through a biblical perspective on womanhood, she helps readers understand how we can receive our bodies as gifts from God and learn to honor him with them.
Our Bodies are Good, and God is Good
As a church youth worker, I appreciate how this book gives me insight into the struggles and questions young women face. As a husband, I am reminded of what a gift it is to have a strong and needed helper in my life. And as a father of a young daughter, I am better prepared to love her with wisdom, compassion, and biblical grounding as she grows into a woman who fears the Lord.
Two refrains from the beginning of the book are echoed throughout: Our bodies are good, and God is good. First, our bodies are good because God created us to have bodies. Our biology, our physical makeup, and the realities of living in a body are not accidents or mistakes. They are part of God’s good design.
Second, when we suffer because of our bodies, we must trust that God has purpose even in our pain. Our suffering is not pointless, and we are not left to endure it alone. God is compassionate toward us, and his goodness remains true even when our circumstances are difficult. For Christians, suffering is not the end of the story. We have hope in the God who made us, cares for us, and promises to redeem all things.
A Much-Needed Guide for Young Women in Today’s World
I was especially pleased to read how DiMarcangelo tackles mental health and appearance. These are significant issues for young women, particularly in a world shaped by social media, comparison, and ever-changing standards of beauty. She rightly emphasizes that we must get off our phones if we struggle with comparison and the temptation.
I was also particularly interested in the way DiMarcangelo explores the gifts God gives us. The gifts of food, rest, beauty, and sex are not things to be understood apart from God, but gifts to be received with gratitude and enjoyed according to his wisdom.
This book is a much-needed guide for young women in today’s world, which is often confused about how God has made us. It is a timely reminder that our bodies are not mistakes to be corrected or burdens to be resented, but gifts to be received, cared for, and stewarded for God’s glory.
