Seven Books that Shaped Me

“Do you have any book recommendations?” This is my most frequently asked question, and I have trouble answering it because people respond to books in different ways. So to better answer this question, here are the seven books that greatly shaped me.

1. The Holiness of God, by R. C. Sproul

I have been leading worship music at church since I was a child, but when I was in high school I started to really think seriously about the God that we sing to. R. C. Sproul’s classic book consumed me with a passion to see that we do not profane His holy name. And it led me to greater, deeper, and higher praise.

2. Desiring God, by John Piper

This book introduced me to the concept of Christian hedonism. This book caused a true paradigm shift. It changed the trajectory of my life, reoriented my lifestyle, and gave me a mission. It introduced me to the ministry of DesiringGod, and made me see worship as not only my duty – but my delight.

3.
ESV Study Bible, by Crossway

When I wanted to get serious about my Bible study, the ESV Study Bible had just been published. It was the perfect fit of beautiful physical design with promises of digital accessibility. It has become what I consider to be the gold standard for Study Bibles, and it introduced me into the world of Crossway.

Adopted for Life, by Russell Moore

Ephesians 1 had hit me hard as I began to dive into deeper doctrines. A theology of adoption was forming, and it was fitting that I would read this landmark work by Russell Moore. This book would change the goals of my life and find a higher calling and purpose for my family.

5.
Systematic Theology: An Introduction to Christian Belief, by John M. Frame

While Wayne Grudem’s was the first Systematic Theology I read cover to cover, this one helped me find a way to synthesize it into my everyday life. I viewed the world differently, saw it more strangely, and beheld the God-designed order and beauty. When the world seems chaotic, we can have confidence in our Creator.

Seeing Beauty and Saying Beautifully: The Power of Poetic Effort in the Work of George Herbert, George Whitefield, and C. S. Lewis, by John Piper

John Piper is an excellent communicator, and this book gave me a glimpse into his influences on his working with words. Writing and speaking would become more than mere hobbies for me. I was challenged to be a better writer, inspired to make more with my words, and called to keep working on my craft.
