In A Basic Guide to Biblical Theology, Alan J. Thompson explores nine themes that unite the Old and New Testaments, helping readers see how the Bible fits together as one coherent story. What I found most helpful were the the “So What?” sections, which consistently draw theological themes into practical application. They help bridge the gap between biblical theology and lived faith.
At the heart of his approach is the kingdom of God, which he presents as the overarching framework of Scripture. Within this framework, the Bible unfolds through the pattern of promise and fulfillment. Thompson begins by grounding the story in creation and rebellion, showing how the Bible’s narrative moves from God’s good design, through human sin, and toward God’s redemptive plan.
Kingdom and Covenant
From there, Thompson traces the major covenants that shape redemptive history—especially those made with Abraham, Moses, and David. These covenants are not isolated moments but a unified structure through which God administers His saving rule. Israel’s history, prophecy, and hope all find their context here, ultimately pointing forward to the new covenant fulfilled in Christ.
I was most interested to learn of the relationship between law and wisdom. He shows how wisdom literature, particularly Proverbs, is deeply connected to the Law of Moses and shaped by the fear of the Lord. Obedience to God’s law is portrayed as true wisdom, and wisdom itself is tied to faithful living under God’s covenant. This theme is further enriched by its connection to kingship in Israel. Ultimately, Jesus emerges as the embodiment of wisdom, and the wise life is one built upon Him. This not only emphasizes obedience but also highlights God’s righteous and gracious character as the one we are called to depend on.
Beauty and Unity
I was most moved to read about prophetic hope. Thompson highlights how the prophets are rooted in Israel’s earlier history while also pointing forward to God’s future redemption. This helped me see more clearly how the prophetic books are not isolated messages but part of a unified storyline that culminates in Christ. It deepened my gratitude for Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of that hope and made me more aware of how that same hope speaks into my own life today.
After reading this book, I have a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of Scripture and the unity of God’s Word. It has strengthened my trust in the coherence of the Bible and in the faithfulness of God, who keeps His promises across generations. While it is presented as a “basic guide,” the book is anything but simplistic. It is rich, theologically grounded, and consistently elevates the beauty and unity of Scripture.
