Bread of Life

What does baking bread have to do with the Bible? How can we see Christ in the kitchen? In Bread of Life, Abigail Dodds helps you savor the all-satisfying goodness of Jesus through the art of bread making.

True Bread from Heaven

Housed in printed caseside, this book looks and feels like a recipe book – a fitting form to showcase Dodd’s 11 delicious, easy-to-follow recipes. But what really makes this book special are the 11 devotionals centered around the theme of bread and Jesus.

The devotions cover a wide range of topics while still focusing on God. Dodds helps us connect God’s words with his fatherly disposition towards us, she helps us see God’s spiritual provisions when we are in the wilderness, and she helps us receive Jesus as the true bread from heaven – the only one that can give us life.

A Humble Hunger for Christ

I was most interested in Dodds’ discussion on leaven, and how San Francisco sourdough can only be made in San Francisco because of the distinct flavor-profile in the San Francisco air. In the same way, we are all unique and have distinct flavor-profiles when it comes to the leaven of our lives and how we display Christ.

I was most moved by her explaining the story of the Syrophoenician woman, and how her desperate need led her to humbly hunger after Christ. It made me examine my own selfish motives and falling for flattery. To be honest, I need to see that I am famished unless I feed on the words of Jesus.

Taste and See

The photography in the book is simply stunning. It belongs on your coffee table just as much as it belongs in your kitchen. This book would make a great gift for those you would like to share the beauty of Christ.

The book ends by explaining how our delighting in the bread of life gives God glory. The enjoyment of Jesus is the glory of eating like a child. We are satisfied by the Son. And this spiritual diet is more important than our physical food. This book will help you taste and see that the Lord is good.
