The Attributes and Works of God

What does the Bible have to say about God? In The Attributes and Work of God, Richard L. Pratt Jr. provides an excellent resource in theological education and theology proper. The books in the Christian Essentials series were produced by Third Millennium Ministries. Based off of a video seminary curriculum, they were originally intended for a global, multilingual, evangelical audience.

Divine Mysteries and Attributes

The book is divided into five sections: (1) What we know about God, (2) How God is different from us, (3) How God is like us, (4) The Trinity, and (5) God’s plan and works. Looking at God in this way brought new avenues for me to see who he is.

I most enjoyed the sections on the Divine Mysteries as well as the Divine Attributes of God. I was reminded that we cannot fully understand God as finite beings, yet God has intentionally and purposefully revealed himself to us. This humbled my heart and I was reminded of the privilege of knowing God and His Son.

Divine Sovereignty and Works

What I most appreciated about this volume were the interviews sprinkled throughout the pages. They serve as personal vignettes that will move you to worship. For instance, in the chapter on God’s divine works, Philip Ryken steps in to speak on God’s sovereignty and how God works according to his purpose.

This book is able to tackle difficult doctrines and distill them to their main truths. For the Trinity, the big ideas are that God is one essence and three persons. This book reminds us that we must believe what the Scripture says without adding or subtracting to it. Key terms and concepts, review questions, and discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter. The end of the book includes a glossary, biography, and various indices.

Divine Truth

At just over 200 pages, this is a simple and succinct book of theology. You will be reminded of God’s works of creation, and challenged to see his works of providence. Distinguishable from other academic theological works for its personal and accesible tone, all Christians can benefit from learning and loving more divine truth about God.

I received a media copy of The Attributes and Work of God and this is my honest review.
