The Life and Work of Jesus

What did Jesus say and do before his life on earth? What is he doing now? What will he be doing in the future? In The Life and Work of Jesus, Ra McLaughlin and Christopher Caudle present the big picture of Jesus.

Approchable

The second volume in the Christian Essentials series from P&R Publishers, this book is an adaptation of video seminary curriculum produced by Third Millennium Ministries. It is approachable and will help you appreciate Jesus more.

I appreciated how the book presents the different roles and offices of Jesus: (1) The Redeemer, (2) The Christ, (3) The Prophet, (4) The Priest, and (5) The King. The Gospel is clearly categorized by looking at Jesus in eternity, creation, redemption, and consummation.

Devotional

The vignettes throughout the book from various scholars help give the book a devotional feel. For instance, R. Albert Mohler Jr. helps us apply Jesus’ prophetic work by reminding us that judgment, joy, and credibility before the watching world are several motivations for faithfulness in Christ.

Taking a big-picture approach to the Son of God, the 328 pages in this book read quickly. Key terms and concepts, review questions, discussion questions, as well as resources for further study make this a robust title. This would be a well-referenced book for preachers, teachers, and leaders in the church.

Motivational

The book ends with a look at the different functions of kings, especially as found in the Old Testament. These include works of justice, mercy, and faithfulness to the people. Where the Old Testament kings failed, Jesus fulfills and forever reigns. My heart is moved to worship, and I am motivated to love him more.
