Unmasking the Prodigal Daughter

In Unmasking the Prodigal Daughter, Heidi Tai shares beautiful poetry from a soul that is blemished but blessed.

Heidi Tai is absolutely one of my favorite authors. I’ve known her mostly through her articles at SOLA Network. But as I have followed her and learnedlearned more of her story through the years, I realized that she is also an artist. In Unmasking the Prodigal Daughter, Heidi Tai shares beautiful poetry from a soul that is blemished but blessed.—and this This book of poetry is a welcome addition to her work.

She writes of being a prodigal daughter, relating both to her earthly father and to her Heavenly Father. Along the way, she tells of love, self-image, past sins, redemption, and pain.

Truth and Tension

Heidi is careful with her words, able to hold truths in tension. Not only does she unmask her prodigal self, but she unpeels her layers. I believe this comes naturally from her testimony.

She describes herself as an “Eldest Daughter who grew up too fast, Trophy Child who confused applause for love, Class Clown who turned every pain into a joke, and Party Girl chasing wild nights and reckless highs.”

She chooses not to forget her past, but to remember it, and write it in the context of who she is now as a new person – a new creation in Christ.

Hurt and Hope

While she speaks of suffering, she holds on to hope. Her pen can’t help but remember God’s promises—all the while pointing to her Savior.

Heidi has a style of writing that I’ve come to know and love. I am always most moved by her pointed, packed poems—and here they come out most potent.

Unmasking the Prodigal Daughter is brave, honest, vulnerable poetry from a woman who ran away and has returned home. Amidst the hurt and the ashes, you’ll find that a heart of hope arises.
