You Have a Calling
In You Have a Calling, Karen Swallow Prior writes about finding your vocation in what is true, good, and beautiful.
Prior explains the differences between jobs, careers, vocations, and callings, bringing dignity to the varied work we all do. I wish I had read this book when I was younger. It is full of biblical wisdom and practical applications.
Prior is an incredible writer. Her prose is warm, humorous, and honest. She is a true teacher, often drawing from poetry to illustrate her points.
Work as Worship
What struck me most were the hard truths contained in this book: you’re not going to be the best at everything, you’re not going to get everything you want, and you can’t be anything you want simply by trying. Nevertheless, Prior remains encouraging and inspiring.
The book ends not with Prior telling you what to do, but with her pointing you toward what you should pursue—what is true, good, and beautiful. It is not an easy task to define and describe these, yet Prior does it exceptionally well.
I read this outstanding book in one sitting. You Have a Calling will free you from striving to find your calling and allow you instead to focus on answering it. There is meaning and purpose in the work we do, and there is a God who receives glory when we work as worship.
