Respectable Sins: Anxiety and Frustration

Review: Ungodliness

  • Ungodliness may be defined as living one’s everyday life with little or not thought of God, or of God’s will, or of God’s glory, or of one’s dependence on God

  • Ungodliness is our most basic sin, and all our other acceptable sins can ultimately be traced to this root sin of ungodliness

  • While you may not be mindful of Him, He is certainly aware of you and sees every dee you do, hears every word you say, and knows every thought you think.

Defining Anxiety and Frustration

  • The opposite of trust in God is either anxiety or frustration

  • Anxiety is a distrust of God and a lack of acceptance of God’s providence in our lives [God’s purposeful sovereignty]

  • Frustration is a sin because it involves being upset or even angry at whatever or whoever is blocking our plans

Patterns

  1. Providence

  2. Promises

  3. Prayer

1. Providence

  • Providence is God’s purposeful sovereignty

  • Learn to accept God’s providence, rest in it and participate in it (Matthew 26:39)

2. Promises

  • Matthew 6:25-34

  • Philippians 4:4-7

  • 1 Peter 5:6-7

  • Psalm 139

3. Prayer

  • Pray for God’s promises to hold true in your heart

  • Pray for dependence upon the Holy Spirit

  • Pray for practical wisdom

Challenges

  • Can you “accept God’s agenda” for your life? That his will is better than your own plans or desires?

  • What would happen if you say “I’m not worried?”

  • What other sins might God be revealing to you because of your anxiety/frustration?
